Viola Restorations, Winter 2026
Viola restoration projects, January-February 2026
From the workshop this week: a pair of sweet German violas!
Our first is a 15" viola made in the Altrichter workshop in Frankfurt an der Oder (a town in the East on the Polish border, not the big city in Hessen with the airport). Made in 1885, its wondefully flamed, aged wood is in terrific condition and sounds wonderful.
We also have a big 16" viola with a nice full sound, particularly through its low register. Made by Kurt Mühlbradt of Obdrup in the far North of Germany in 1948, it is an excellent example of early post-war violinmaking.
Both are fully restored to look and play like new, and are available for trial in our workshop. Come check them out!
